Local Service

Why Homeowners Choose Lawn Panther for Landscape Lighting Repair

Most of our repair calls come in on systems we didn’t install, and we take them. Lawn Panther is owner-operated, licensed and insured, and our first move is to find out whether the system you already have is worth saving — usually it is, and bringing it back costs a fraction of replacing it. We do fewer jobs than we could and we’d rather keep it that way, because the properties we look after are ones we expect to be on for years. American/Veteran/Family-owned and local, serving Raleigh’s suburban homeowners, HOAs, and commercial properties since 2019 — for the Purrfect lawn.

FX Luminaire and Luxor System Repair and Diagnostics

We diagnose and repair FX Luminaire fixtures and Luxor and Luxor ZDC controllers — transformer faults, failed splices, voltage drop at the end of a run, zone and group programming, and app pairing. We also service Pro-Trade brass and most other low-voltage systems, whoever installed them. Diagnostics are run by a Hunter University certified Lighting Specialist, so the fault gets found instead of guessed at.

Repairs and Troubleshooting

What We Repair — Common Landscape Lighting Problems

From one dead fixture to a whole system that will not power up. These are the faults we are called out for most:

  • Failed or humming transformers — no power
  • Dead zones — a whole section of lights out
  • Dim, flickering, or uneven lights (voltage drop)
  • Burnt-out bulbs and LED upgrades
  • Corroded or failed wire connections
  • Cut or chewed underground wiring
  • Water or moisture inside fixtures
  • Broken or knocked-over fixtures — replace and re-stake
  • Timer, photocell, or smart controller faults
  • Whole-system troubleshooting, seasonal maintenance, tune-ups, and adding fixtures

How a Repair Visit Works and What It Costs

We start at the transformer and work outward, reading voltage along each run until the fault shows itself — that is faster and cheaper than replacing parts until something changes. Service, repair, re-bulb and add-on work is $65 per hour, and most single-fault repairs are finished inside an hour. Anything bigger — a transformer replacement, a full re-run of buried wire — gets quoted once we know what is actually wrong. Licensed and insured.

One Local Team

Landscape lighting is one of several services we provide across Raleigh’s southern suburbs. Beyond lighting, we also handle weed control and fertilization, lawn mowing, landscape maintenance, tree and shrub planting, hedge and bush trimming, and lawn aeration — one local team instead of separate services. See all the towns we serve on our service areas page.

Landscape Lighting FAQs

A few things homeowners ask before getting started with landscape lighting, smart and color systems, and service on an existing setup.

When the whole system is dark the fault is at the source, not the fixtures. Check that the outlet has power and the GFCI has not tripped, then look at the transformer’s own breaker — a shorted wire downstream trips it again every time it is reset. A failed photocell or timer will also leave the system off. We trace it back to the source rather than swapping lights one at a time.

One dark run means the break is on that run, not in the transformer. The usual causes are a buried splice that has filled with water, a wire cut by an edger or shovel during landscaping or mulching, or a failed connection at the first fixture. We read voltage along the run from the transformer outward — where it drops to zero is where the break is.

A failing transformer announces itself before it dies: it hums loudly, runs hot, trips its own breaker, or powers the system only intermittently. Test it by reading voltage at the output terminals with the system on. No voltage at the terminals while the outlet has power means the transformer is the fault — but a breaker that keeps tripping usually means a short in the wire, not a dead transformer.

Switch the transformer off, reset its internal breaker button, confirm the GFCI outlet feeding it has not tripped, then switch it back on. If the breaker trips again immediately, stop. It is protecting the system from a short somewhere in the buried wire, and resetting it repeatedly can damage the transformer. That is the point to have the run traced.

A quality stainless or powder-coated transformer generally runs 10 to 15 years, often longer if it is mounted out of direct weather and not loaded to its limit. The ones that fail early are almost always undersized for the number of fixtures on them, or mounted where water can sit in the housing.

A cut low-voltage wire is repaired with a waterproof gel-filled connector, not a wire nut and tape — an ordinary splice buried in wet soil corrodes and fails again within a season. Cut back to clean copper on both ends, join with a rated connector, and re-bury the repair. If the same run has failed more than once, the wire is usually undersized for its length and re-running it costs less than chasing it.

Often, yes. Our brass fixtures use replaceable LED lamps, so a dead light is usually a $10 to $20 lamp rather than a new fixture. Integrated LED fixtures — where the board is sealed into the housing — cannot be re-lamped, and on those the fixture is replaced. We tell you which kind you have before quoting anything.

Service, repair, re-bulb and add-on work is $65 per hour, and the evening diagnostic demo is free. Most single-fault repairs — a failed splice, one bad fixture, a photocell — are finished inside an hour. Replaceable LED lamps run $10 to $20 each. A transformer replacement or a full re-run of buried wire is quoted after we have found the fault. Call or text 984-284-5399.
