Third, a black fungus called sooty mold grows on that honeydew, turning leaves and stems dark, sometimes almost coal-black. Ants are a fourth clue: they farm honeydew-producing pests for the sugar, so a trail of ants marching up a shrub often means a sap-sucker is feeding above.
