Fescue Seeding Care Sheet

What to Do Before and After We Seed Your Fescue

New seed only grows if the top inch of soil stays damp until it sprouts. Here is what to expect. This is the same sheet we hand you on the job. Print it, or keep it on your phone.

Lawn Panther fescue seeding care sheet: before seeding day, watering week by week and first mow

Before Seeding Day

  1. Tell us if any weed control was put on this lawn, including weed-and-feed.
  2. Let us know if anything is buried in the lawn.
  3. Water the lawn a day or two before. Soft soil lets the aerator pull deeper plugs, so the seed falls deeper.
  4. Mow before we come.

Seeding Day

  1. The lawn will look messy and uneven until the grass starts growing.
  2. Top dressing is not spread evenly. We use it to help the seed and to level low spots, so some areas get more than others.
  3. Watering is the single most important thing. Follow the table below.

After Seeding: Week by Week

When

Watering

Mowing and use

Until seedlings are 3 inches

Short waterings to keep the top inch damp. 1 to 2 a day when mild, 3 to 4 when hot or windy. Do not overwater or leave the ground soaked.

Stay off. Sprouts show in 1 to 3 weeks, first in the aeration holes.

First mow (about 4 to 6 weeks)

Skip watering the day before.

At about 4.5 inches, cut to 3.5 inches. Use a sharp blade, or have Lawn Panther mow it.

After that

Water longer and less often, down to about 1 inch a week.

Normal use after the second mow.

Who Does Your Weed Control? This Matters

Many weed control sprays include a pre-emergent. It stops seeds from sprouting, weed or grass.

  • If Lawn Panther does your weed control, we already know what went down and plan it around your seeding. Here’s how we handle weeds on a fescue lawn.
  • If another company sprays your lawn, show us the records they left you for the last 6 applications.
