How much does low-voltage landscape lighting cost?

About $100 to $150 per installed fixture, and most homeowners spend $2,000 to $4,500 for a full property. A DIY starter kit is $200 to $500. The spread depends on fixture count, solid brass versus plated, and controls.

Do I need an electrician to install low-voltage lighting?

Not for the 12V side — once a transformer is powered, adding fixtures needs no license. You only need an electrician if a new exterior 120V outlet has to be added for the transformer, which we coordinate.

How long does low-voltage landscape lighting last?

LED lamps run 25,000 to 50,000 hours (roughly 10 to 15 years), solid brass fixtures 15 to 25 years, and transformers about 8 to 12. Plated or aluminum fixtures often corrode in 3 to 5 years, which is why we use solid brass.

Is low-voltage or solar landscape lighting better?

Low-voltage, for almost every real project. Solar dims on cloudy days, is far less bright, and needs new batteries every one to two years. Low-voltage delivers full, reliable brightness every night and lasts for years.

How many lumens do I need for landscape lighting?

It depends on the target: path lights 100 to 300 lumens, well lights around 100, and tree uplights 300 to 700 or more. More lumens is not better — matching output to what you are lighting is what looks right.

How deep do you bury landscape lighting wire?

At least 6 inches, which meets most local codes and keeps the cable clear of aerators, edgers, and shovels. We run 12-gauge direct-burial cable and seal every connection with a waterproof, burial-rated connector.
